Guatemala Dist. 6440 Service Project

District 6440's International Service Committee announces the opening of registration for the upcoming district wide trip to Ak' Tenamit in Guatemala's east coast. Ak'Tenamit (http://www.aktenamit.org) is a Mayan organization run entirely by Mayan people. Our hands-on project will provide labor and moral support to these native Guatemalans as they strive to change their lives, abandon poverty, and regain their self respect.

We will leave O'Hare on Saturday, January 26 at 2:00 PM and return on Monday, February 4 at 8:30 PM. We are flying economy class to Houston (2 hours and 41 minutes) and continue also on economy to Guatemala City (2 hours and 50 minutes). Return is similarly scheduled with the connection in Houston.

We will spend our first night in Guatemala City and depart next morning to Puerto Barrios on Guatemala's Atlantic (east) coast. From there we will continue by small boats (10 passengers) to Livingston, also on the coast, and we will commence work next morning. Some of us will travel to work also by riverboats every day. Work will conclude on Friday. The work will be 'light' (painting, cleaning, washing), 'moderate' (brick, laying, cement mixing, sand sifting), or 'heavy' (cement carrying, digging, cinder block moving). Each of us will be able to select the work we will do according to physical considerations.

The following Saturday we will visit Tikal National Park (http://www.tikalpark.com) and on Sunday we will return to Guatemala City. Total cost of the trip is $1,500 including all transportation, hotels and meals. Price also includes all fees and taxes. Price does not include alcoholic beverages. More details to follow.
